(very) Late Saints deal means Mina-mal sleep!
After being linked with several different players during Monday's Deadline Day, Saints finally managed to secure the services of an attacking midfielder.
Japanese international, Takumi Minamino, joined on loan from Liverpool for the remainder of the 2020/21 season.
With options limited at the moment - due to an ever growing injury list - Ralph Hasenhüttl snapped up the ex-RB Salzburg player.
The 26-year-old, who has failed to really make an impact at Anfield since arriving in January 2020, will now add much needed support to the Saints squad.
Its hoped, given the way RB Salzburg (like Hasenhüttl's old RB Leipzig side) play, Minamino should be able to adapt to the Austrian's style with relative ease.
Comfortable playing both centrally and out wide, Minamino will become the second Japan international to represent Saints, following in the footsteps of Maya Yoshida.
Minamino started his career with J.League club Cerezo Osaka, where he came through the youth ranks, while also playing regularly at youth level for his country, before graduating to the senior side in 2015. He's since gone on to make 26 appearances for Japan, scoring 12 times.
Having battled all day to try and get someone across the line, Hasenhüttl was unsurprisingly delighted with his new arrival.
“I am very pleased to welcome Takumi to our squad for the rest of this season."
“He will help provide another good attacking option, and is importantly the right profile of player for us."
“This will give us some additional depth in our squad at an important time, and I am looking forward to beginning work with him on the training pitch.” the Austrian continued.
Due to the timing of Minamino's registration, he won't be eligible to play at Old Trafford tonight. However, having featured regularly enough for Jurgen Klopp's side this season, he should be ready to go against Newcastle United on Saturday.
While Minamino was the only addition at St. Mary's on Deadline Day, Yan Valery (Birmingham) and Shane Long (AFC Bournemouth) both left on loan.
Valery's departure means Ryan Bertrand and Kyle Walker-Peters are now the only recognised full-backs at the Club.
The lack of additional cover in that position will surely keep a few Saints fans - and Hasenhüttl - sweating between now and the end of the season!
